A list of classes offered is below including a brief
description. Due to enrollment all classes may not be offered during each
term. Please inquire with a counselor to see if the class you are
interested in is available. For a more detailed description, please see
the Course Description Booklet available in the counseling center.
READING LISTS
| English 9 |
Mastery of basic grammatical
principles, paragraph development, and an in-depth study of selected
literature. |
| English 9 Honors |
Advanced paced coverage of grammar and
advanced composition techniques. Additional reading is required for
for analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, and application.
Recommendation of current English teacher required. |
| English 10 |
Study of grammar and usage,
composition, vocabulary, spelling, speaking and reading skills. World
literature will be studied including coverage of 3 novels. |
| English 10 Honors |
Advanced paced coverage of of grammar,
composition, vocabulary, spelling, and reading skills. An accelerated
study of world literature is also covered including analysis of 5
novels. Additional reading is required for analysis, synthesis,
critical thinking, and application. Recommendation of teacher
required. |
| English 11 |
Encompasses a study of grammar and
usage including composition, vocabulary and reading skills. Includes a
survey of short stories, essays, poems, novels and drama. |
| English 11 Honors |
Accelerated study of grammar and usage,
composition and vocabulary. Includes accelerated studies of short
stories, essays, poems, novels, and drama from American literature.
Additional reading required. |
| English 12 |
Encompasses study of grammar and usage
as well as composition, vocabulary, spelling, speaking, and reading
skills. Literature studies include Macbeth, short stories,
essays, poems, and epics form British literature. |
| English 12 Honors |
Accelerated study of grammar and usage,
composition, vocabulary, speaking and reading skills. Study various
compositions from British literature and create a literary research
paper. |
| AP English 12 |
Extensive and intensive reading and
writing are required. Specific requirements for book cards should be
acquired from instructor or counselors. Prerequisite - English 11
Honors and teacher recommendation. |
| English Composition 101 |
Option for Honors English 12. Material
covered encompasses Alabama Course of Study and Jefferson State
Community College English 101 Course Competencies. Several
prerequisites- see course handbook. |
All courses require either research essays or papers with documentation
according to MLA format.

| History of Film in America |
Designed to expose students to the
development of cinema in America from the silent era through the
present. |
| African-American Literature |
Supplements and extends the
chronological survey of American literature required in 11th grade. |
| Creative Writing |
Students will produce various writing
types- stories, poetry, journals, and personal essays. |
| English Composition 102 |
Dual Enrollment course |

Focuses on literature and culture of
the South |
| Mythology |
Exposes students to myths and legends
of various cultures, both ancient and modern. |
| ESL I, II, III, IV |
Provided to non-English language
background students. |
