ACT Registration:  The next ACT will be offered June 14, 2008.  Regular registration deadline is

May 9, 2008.  Basic Registration fee is $30.00 .  Juniors are encouraged to take the ACT +

Writing (fee is $44.50) Late registration:  (additional $19.00 fee) May 10-23, 2008.  Registration packet may be obtained in the guidance department or you may register online at www.act.org .  (This will be the final

ACT given for this school year!)

 

SAT Registration:  The next opportunity for testing is June 7, 2008.  Regular registration deadline is

May 6, 2008. Late registration:  May 15, 2008.  Registration fee for the Reasoning Test

is $43.00. (Late Registration fee is $22.00 extra).  Registration packet online at www.collegeboard.com .

 

Test Preparation for ACT and SAT:  Please log on to  www.number2.com for totally free test preparation for the

                ACT and/or SAT.  This website has tutorials, practice sessions, vocabulary builders, and other tools that

                might be helpful to you!

Selective Service Men must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

 

Gadsden State Community College:  GSCC offers a variety of scholarships, academic as well as technical,

                which cover tuition only.  For a list of scholarships available, please log on to www.gadsdenstate.edu .

               

MasterMinds Learning Center, Inc.:  Need academic help over the summer?????  MasterMinds has several

                classes to help you keep your skills sharp before the next school year.  Review classes are offered in

                Algebra I, Algebra A, Spanish I, ACT Math, and ACT English.  Each class is $275.00.  If you are interested

                in any of these, you may pick up a flyer in the guidance department, or call 970-1117 to inquire.

 

Navy ROTC Scholarship Opportunity:  Juniors.......now is the time for you to think about your future!  If you

                are interested in earning a scholarship valued at up to $180,000 and are considering the military.....the

                NROTC Scholarship might be for you!  General eligibility requirements include: US citizenship, 17 years

                old by September 1 of the year you start college, physically qualified, and academically qualified (minimum

                Math ACT score of 22/ English 21 or SAT CritReading 530/CritMath520).  For more information, visit

Trussville-East Jefferson (Daybreak)Rotary Club Scholarship:  Applications are available in the guidance

                department.  Students applying should have a minimum 3.5 GPA.  Applications are due back to the

                guidance department by April 30, 2008.

 

Kid’s Chance Scholarship Fund:  The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund was established by the Workers’

                Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bare in 1992 to provide scholarships for college and technical

school to children who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident. 

The scholarship fund is administered by the Alabama Law Foundation, Inc. and has awarded scholarships

totaling over $375,000.   The deadline for submitting applications each year is May 1st.  Students meeting

criteria can complete an application online at www.alfinc.org .

 

University of Alabama SITE Summer Program:  The UA Student Introduction toEngineering (SITE) Summer

                Program will be held July 6-11 and July 13-18 with approximately 40 students participating each week.

                Informational brochures are available in the guidance offices.  Students must register for the program online

                at http://site.eng.ua.edu .  Deadline for complete application is May 1,2008.

 

Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association Scholarships: The AHSADCA has

                established 10 scholarships for the children of active members.  These scholarships are worth $500 each.

                Applications may be obtained from the guidance department.  Deadline for completed application is

                May 1, 2008.

 

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Fund Repayable Scholarship Program:  The Stonewall Jackson Memorial Fund was

                established in 1955 to memorialize ‘Stonewall’ Jackson through a program of education (ESSAY

                contest and repayable scholarships).  In order to qualify, applicants must submit the following:  an essay

                of at least 1500 words in length relating to some aspect of the life of Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson

                (bibliography is required but is not to be included in determining the length of the essay); an application

                form providing pertinent personal information; and a 100 word statement on the importance of the repayable

                scholarship to the applicant.  Informational letter and application form can be obtained in the guidance

                department.  Deadline for submission is May 1, 2008.

 

Career Exploration Workshop:  The School of Architecture and Department of Interior Design at LSU in Baton Rouge

                will be offering a one-week career exploration workshop, June 8-14, 2008.  There is a $500 fee to attend. 

                Partial and full scholarships may be awarded if funds are available and there is a financial need. 

                Applications may be picked up in the guidance department.  Deadline for application and fee is

May 12, 2008.

 

Miles College Pearson Education Summer Camp:  Learn skills in reading, writing, math, and science while

                working with undergraduate teacher education candidates.  Participate in field trips to the Birmingham

                Civil Rights Institute, McWane Science Center, Rufner Mountain Nature Center, and Birmingham-

                Southern Planetarium.  High school students are eligible to participate.  Cost is $20.00 for registration.

                Free campus housing, meals, and entrance to all events will be afforded to participants.  Camp is

                June 8-14, 2008.  For an application, please visit the guidance department.  Deadline for application

                and $20 registration fee is May 7, 2008.

 

Young Voices of America Speech Contest:  The contest is open to 9th through 12th graders for the purpose of

                promoting a better understanding of patriotism and the ‘American’ way.  Each student must present a speech

                of 4-6 minutes in duration on a subject relating to patriotism.  Interested students should see one of the

                Social Studies teachers here at CCHS.  Deadline for speech submission is Friday, May 9, 2008.

 

Jean Teens 2008:  Jean Teens is a program started by the Civettes Club of Birmingham over 25 years ago.  The

                program gives young adults an opportunity to work with children and adults with disabilities.  Students, this

                would be a wonderful community service to perform!  The program is a seven-week program beginning on

                Monday, June 11th and ending on Friday, August 1st.  Participants must attend ONE of two orientation

                sessions to be held on Friday, May 30 (10am-12pm) or Monday, June 2 (3pm -5pm).  If you are interested in

                participating, please pick up an information sheet and application in the guidance department.  Deadline for

                complete application is May 23, 2008.

  

Summer Transportation Institute: Tuskegee University will host the 2008 Summer Transportation Institute for

                secondary school students June 3rd-June 29th .  The purpose of this institute is to create awareness, in

                secondary students, of the career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry.  Approximately

                20 rising tenth grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the four-week summer program.

                Applications are available in the guidance department.  Deadline for complete application is May 25, 2008.

 

Lawson State’s 21st Century Advanced Technology Summer Academy:  Students entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th

                grade this fall are invited to explore robotics, engineering, and manufacturing at Lawson State through the

                21st Century Advanced Technology Academy.  Camp will be held June 3-5 from 8:00am-3:00pm. Cost is

Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity (Kappa Beta Chapter) at Troy University:  The Kappa Beta Chapter of the Alpha Tau

                Omega Fraternity at Troy University offers scholarships in the amount of $200 each.  If you are a MALE and

                plan to attend Troy University in the fall of 2008, please pick up an application in the guidance department for

                this scholarship.  Deadline for complete application is June 17, 2008

 

American Association of University Women (AAUW):  The Birmingham branch of the AAUM will be giving

                scholarships to deserving women to enable them to have the opportunity to take advantage of higher

                education.  Applicants must:  be female, plan to attend college in Alabama, have been a resident of

                the State of Alabama for one year, need and deserve (have good grades and be of good character). 

                Interested young women should pick up an application in the guidance department.  Deadline for

                Complete application is  June 30, 2008.

Savannah College of Art and Design:  SCAD offers summer programs in art and design for high school students.

                Rising Star is a five-week residential program beginning June 21st.  SCAD Summer Seminars are

                educational workshops designed for students who have completed their freshmen, sophomore or junior

Johnson & Wales University Scholarships:  JWU offers high academic achievers an opportunity to earn renewable

                scholarships, valued from $7500 to full tuition.  If you would like more information, please log on to

Jefferson State’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Camp (STEM Camp):  Looking for something to do

                this summer?  Attend a FREE camp exploring exciting careers in robotics, manufacturing, automotive

                technology, veterinary technology, healthcare, computer science, and many more.  Students entering the

                10th, 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2008 are welcomed to apply.  Camp will be held July 7-11 or July 21-25 from

Order of the Eastern Star (Agape Chapter) Scholarship:  Applicants must be African-American females involved in

                community service and are/will be full-time students entering/attending an accredited college or university. 

                The Agape Chapter #898 has awarded two $500 scholarships in the past and will be doing it again in the

                fall of 2008.  Applications are available in the guidance department.  Deadline for complete application is

                September 19, 2008.
